As February winds down, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that, much like every other year, March and April aren’t going to be nearly as nice as you’ve fantasized about them being all winter. The good news is Hollywood is officially charting a course out of the dump months and straight into Summer-Blockbuster Season. Here are some upcoming films to see before they leave theaters and a few to look forward to!
Annihilation
In theaters
In this Alex Garland (Ex Machina) directed adaption of the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, Natalie Portman stars as Lena, a biologist who accompanies a team of scientists into an ever-expanding extradimensional veil called The Shimmer in the hopes of finding out what happened to her husband (everyone’s husband Oscar Isaac) who emerged from the same anomaly with no recollection of how he got there. As one would expect from Garland and the source material, Annihilation is dense with philosophical quandaries, breathtaking visuals, and some seriously gonzo jump scares.
Black Panther
In theaters
Regardless of how tired you are of Marvel movies, you’re going to want to see Black Panther. For starters, it grossed $241.9 million over President’s Day, and smashed the record for the largest President’s Day opening in history. And not without good reason—Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa, the newly crowned king of the African nation of Wakanda as he fights to defend it from the machinations of the villain Erik Killmonger, whose connection to Wakanda runs deeper than expected. With Lupita Nyong’o, The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett supporting, you don’t have to know anything about the Marvel Cinematic Universe to enjoy Black Panther.
Ready Player One
Premieres March 29, 2018
Treat yourself to a movie-length episode of “I Love The 80s” with this exhaustively designed upcoming science fiction spectacle by acclaimed director Stephen Spielberg. In Columbus, Ohio circa 2045, Wade Watts (Ty Sheridan) is one of untold billions who find refuge in a massive online game called “OASIS.” When the game’s inventor James Halliday (Mark Rylance) passes away unexpectedly, he bequeathes full control of the simulation (and part of his vast fortune) to whoever can find his Easter Egg, which he’s hidden at the end of a sprawling challenge called “Anorak’s Quest.” Wade and his friends will race against the clock and fend off corporate espionage as they hunt for the Easter Egg, and the movie contains references to everything from classic films such as The Iron Giant to the arcade game Street Fighter.
Avengers: Infinity War
Premieres April 26, 2018
If you’ve been wondering about what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to do with all those shiny Infinity Stones they’ve been teasing since the second Thor film, wonder no more. Drawing together a truly arresting cast of characters, including Spider-Man, Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Avengers will have to face their biggest threat yet when Thanos (voiced by Josh Brolin) comes to collect, armed with an Infinity Gauntlet that might spell the end for our planet and the entire galaxy if he can complete it. To find out what happens, you’ll have to catch the latest installment of the MCU on April 26th.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Premieres May 25, 2018
Find out the backstory of the galaxy’s most puckish rogue in the upcoming Star Wars spinoff film, Solo. Alden Ehrenrich stars as the space smuggler in what’s being described as “a space Western” that will also feature Game of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke and Atlanta’s Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian. Details are tight about the Ron Howard-directed feature out this summer, but diehard fans of the Star Wars universe certainly won’t want to miss it.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Premieres June 22, 2018
It’s a Jurassic World, we’re all just living in it. In the sequel to the 2015 blockbuster, Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt return to Isla Nublar in order to rescue the remaining dinosaurs left over from the theme park’s destruction after their habitat is threatened by a volcanic event. In doing so, they’ll discover a conspiracy that might put dinosaurs back on the top of the food chain—for good. Features the return of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Malcolm Gladwell, and will be in theaters on June 22nd.
