Event trend: book a hands-on cooking class

It’s been an interesting summer in the grocery world. During the past few months, Blue Apron, one of the country’s first and most standout meal-kit delivery services, went public on the New York Stock Exchange. Amazon announced its acquisition of Whole Foods for a whopping $13.7 billion. Wal-Mart, the largest grocer in the United States, with annual sales of $170 billion, logged their highest grocery sales in the past 5 years, with produce and meat ranking as top selling items. The retail giant is in fact amping up their grocery delivery services; 900 stores deliver now, that will raise to 1,100 by year end.

These big headlines prove that despite the heat, it’s cool to cook.

Part of the growing popularity of meal kit companies like Blue Apron, Plated and HelloFresh, might be their recipe variety. According to a recent survey by the Specialty Food Association, “More than half of Americans (51 percent) would prepare dinner at home more often if they had new ideas. Millennials need the most inspiration (63 percent) compared to the more experienced boomers (42 percent).”

Jennifer Clair, acclaimed chef and owner of Home Cooking New York confirms, “While we have a diversity of students in our classes, from retirees to new parents, the millennial demographic seems to top our charts in terms of registration.”
